Dr. H. Rusty Harris, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, has discovered a new circuit known as a meminductor. A circuit breaker is an electrical device used to direct and control the flow of electricity through an electrical circuit. These three elements are known as resistor, capacitor and inductor. Two other circuit elements, the memristor and the memcapacitor, have only been discovered in the last fifteen years.
These new circuit (New Circuit known as a Meminductor) components are called memory versions of their old counterparts, and the current and voltage components are based on the original values of current or voltage and time, such as memory. “These two discoveries really shook the world as far as electrical engineering goes,” Harris said. “All of a sudden we thought we had three, but now we’ve seen these two again. So that made us think, “Okay, there must be other things, but how do we understand what they are?” How do we explain all of these things individually? But it turns out that there is a relationship between each of the resistors in its family and each of the capacitors in its family.
Harris and his student developed a two-port passive system—consisting of a core of resonating electromagnets and a pair of permanent magnets—to monitor the magnetic field and magnetic field of an inductor circuit. With the help of this tool, Harris was able to show the existence of a hysteresis resistance that is converted to an inductor that leads to its mem state, or a memory like its shape, from the same definition as the memristor and memcapacitor did.
The researchers published their findings in the February issue of the journal Scientific Reports, which is the fifth largest journal in the world and part of the Nature portfolio. “The new findings are exciting,” Harris said. “Both the student-teacher relationship in this project is very good. During our conversation, we feed on each other – I learned something new based on my conversation with him and he learned something new based on my experience.
